Join us for an inspiring evening with Dr. Edith Widder, internationally renowned deep-sea explorer, MacArthur Fellow, and founder of the Ocean Research & Conservation Association (ORCA).
In this compelling presentation titled "Here Be Monsters," Dr. Widder tackles a critical question for our time: How do we create the next generation of explorers?
We need explorers now more than at any other point in human history. Drawing on remarkable personal stories of deep-sea discovery鈥攊ncluding her pioneering work capturing the elusive giant squid on camera鈥擠r. Widder will share her profound passion for the ocean and a steadfast commitment to nurturing the explorer in all of us.
Whether you are curious about the mysteries of the deep, ocean enthusiast, a student, or scientist, this talk will ignite your sense of wonder and underscore the vital importance of protecting our blue planet.

About Edith Widder, Ph.D.
Dr. Edith Widder is an internationally renowned deep-sea explorer, conservationist, and MacArthur Fellow dedicated to unlocking the mysteries of the ocean. A graduate of Tufts University, she earned her M.S. in Biochemistry and Ph.D. in Neurobiology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. As a certified scientific research pilot, Dr. Widder has completed hundreds of deep-sea submersible dives and pioneered the design of groundbreaking instrumentation鈥攊ncluding HIDEX, LoLAR, and the "Eye-in-the-Sea" camera system鈥攖o observe ocean life without disruption.
Dr. Widder is perhaps best known for her historic work co-filming the giant squid in its natural habitat for the first time, a monumental achievement featured on Discovery Channel. The founder of the Ocean Research & Conservation Association (ORCA), her extraordinary career has earned her the prestigious Explorers Club Citation of Merit and a featured role in the documentary A Life Illuminated. She is also the author of the memoir Below the Edge of Darkness.
