Dr. Kollander鈥檚 research focuses on modern German history in general and the contributions of recent German and Austrian emigres to the war against Nazism in particular. 听She has served as department chair, special assistant to the dean, and as a provost fellow.
Her publications include two books: 听Frederick III: Germany's Liberal Emperor (Greenwood Press, 1995) and 听"I Must Be a Part of this War": A German American鈥檚 Fight against Hitler and Nazism (with John O'Sullivan, contributor; Fordham University Press, 2005). 听Her articles have appeared in the scholarly journals German History, European Review of History, Yearbook of German American Studies, and The Historian.
Recent publications include an article 鈥淓mpress Frederick and the Women鈥檚 Movement in Nineteenth Century Germany鈥 Journal of International Women鈥檚 History 听(2020), 听and two book chapters 鈥淭he Role of German and Austrian Emigres in the U.S. Army in the Liberation of Hitler鈥檚 Fortress Europe and the Denazification Process 鈥渋n Beyond Camps and Forced Labour: Current International Research on Survivors of Nazi Persecution. 听(Cham, Switzerland: Springer Publishing, 2020) and 鈥淕erman and Austrian Child Emigres in the U.S. and the War against Nazism,鈥 in the conference volume Children and War: Past and Present. (Warwick, UK: Helion and Company, 2022)
Forthcoming publications include an edited book, The U.S. Presidency, the Holocaust and the State of Israel, (conference volume from the 2024 Larkin Symposium, University Press of Florida 2026), an updated version of a 2013 essay 鈥淏oomerang Resistance: 听German Emigres in the U.S. Army in the ETO during World War II鈥 contribution to Thomas W. Zeiler鈥檚 two volume 听A Companion to the Second World War (Wiley-Blackwell Publishing, 2026), and a book chapter, 鈥淕erman and Austrian Emigres in the U.S. Army and the Holocaust鈥 in The U.S. Military and the Holocaust edited by Adam Seipp and Kaete O鈥機onnell. (University of Texas El Paso Press, 2026). Her current manuscript project is entitled: From Immigration to Liberation: Recent German and Austrian Emigres in the US Army and the War against Nazism.
