Students will be exposed to key abilities and skill sets necessary to manage such a lodging facility through familiarization with the role of the general manager position. Students will also study specific competitive benchmark tools used by general managers (i.e., Smith Travel Accommodation Report). The class will feature primarily face-to-face meetings as well a high level of interaction via email. Students are expected to be self-motivated and self-directed in their reading assignments as scheduled by the professor. Students are required to check their email accounts on a regular basis (at least 4 times per week; daily is preferable) to stay current on any reading assignments or class information. Credit Hours: 3 Prerequisite: HFT 3003, Introduction to Hospitality Management Course Learning Objectives To educate college-level hospitality management students with the basic skills and abilities needed to enter the profession of lodging management. To provide students with a thorough level of understanding in interpretation and analysis of the Smith Travel Accommodation Report (STAR). Upon completion of this course, students will be familiar with lodging management terminology. Will be able to discuss and analyze various hotel departments and their inherent staffing needs. Will be proficient at interpreting a lodging propertys STAR report. Grading Scale A 90% - 100% B+ 89%-89.99% B 80%-88.99% C+ 79% - 79.99% C 70%-79.99% D 60%-69.99% F <59.99% Curving: There is no curving in this course on any assessment. The STAR Report exam is taken in the classroom during regular class time. Students may use only a standard calculator for this exam. The specific time required to make up an incomplete grade is at the discretion of the instructor. Classroom Etiquette Policy: Electronic Devices: The use of laptop computers in class is permitted solely in support of learning activities taking notes, for example. These other activities are bothersome to those fully engaged in the learning process. Cell phones, PDAs, and other electronic devices capable of communicating outside the classroom must be turned off while class is in session. The professor respects each individual to share his or her opinion when speaking in class and asks the same respect to have an uninterrupted class exempt from disturbances these electronic devices may cause.
