Study and evaluation of new materials and methods of teaching secondary school music. Objectives Effective teaching engages a constellation of intellectual, artistic, and interpersonal skills. Learning to influence behavior and thinking in the classroom requires not only a depth of understanding and a facility in applying the principles of your discipline, but also a thorough understanding of the fundamental nature of human learning. This course is designed to provide specific skills and knowledge useful in teaching instrumental music in secondary schools. Topics within the domain, including philosophy, learning theory, education history, music literature, and administration will be considered and discovered through readings and discussions. Video analyses, aural acuity exercises and observed teaching activities will function to improve the skills at the foundation of effective teaching. 1. Explain the fundamental principles of human learning and their application in the development of intellectual and motor skills. 2. Articulate meaningful instructional goals for professionals, pre-professionals, amateurs, and children. 3. Design effective learning sequences that focus on the development of (a) intellectual flexibility and depth and (b) excellent fundamental skills. 4. Create successful learning experiences that effectively change student behavior and thinking. 5. Speak and write clearly and cogently. Give succinct instructions and direct, effective, positive and negative feedback. 6. Systematically analyze the effectiveness of your teaching on the basis of student accomplishment. 7. Assignments Written Commentaries: (Totaling 20% of final grade) For each of the essays, write a concise paragraph, written in Word, 12 pt. font, double- spaced that explains, in your own words, the essays fundamental thesis and describes the positive application of the information to your own experiences as a teacher and learner. In addition, write at least one question that was generated by the reading (no longer than 300 words, submitted in your Google Drive folder, with the essay title in the subject line). Notebook: Compile a notebook throughout the semester of assignments, notes, and all other necessary artifacts that successfully demonstrate your participation in this class. The Notebook and your Grade Checklist are required in order for you to take the Final Exam. Midterm: (Totaling 10% of final grade) Midterm will cover Essays, Observation, and Management Procedures. Meet minimum criterion on written examination. Class Discussions/Demonstrations/Rehearsal Frames: (Totaling 40% of final grade) Actively participate in class discussions by contributing interesting ideas and posing thoughtful questions. Provide in-class teaching demonstrations to your classmates. Create Rehearsal Frames from videos of in class demonstrations. Final Exam: (Totaling 10% of final grade) After submitting the Notebook and Grade Checklist, demonstrate competency on your final exam. Teacher Field Observations: (Totaling 20% of final grade) Complete 15 hours of observation at an approved site. Students must document hours and have supervisors sign a Record of Hours log, which must be submitted to the course instructor by uploading to Canvas. The competency assessment for this course will be completed based upon student field experience and reflection. The template for this assignment is posted on Canvas.
