Since there is no required textbook (or associated cost), a student membership in the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA) is required. Details will be provided in class and via email. The cost is less than the textbook that would normally be required. Course Description This course focuses on the operations and management of private clubs including membership, golf, food & beverage, tennis, spa, and club marketing. In addition, financial structure, equity/non-equity leadership, amenities management, committee formats, and guest service strategies specific to private clubs are examined. Assurance of Learning Outcomes (ALOs) Upon completion of the semester, students will be able to: List the duties of a clubs general manager as well as a clubs department managers Define the different types of private clubs and their unique attributes Identify the organizational structure in social/country clubs Distinguish tax-exempt clubs from non-tax-exempt clubs Differentiate equity clubs from non-equity clubs Describe the legal and appropriate methods for marketing in the private club industry List a minimum of two governmental regulations that impact the private club industry Provide a minimum of two unique differences between food and beverage operations in private clubs and other segments of the hospitality industry (i.e., hotels or resorts) Credit Hours: 3 Pre-requisite: None Co-requisite: None Class Time Commitment: According to Florida Administrative Code, Rule 6A-10.033, students must spend a minimum of 2,250 minutes of in-class time during a 3-credit course. Additionally, students enrolled in a 3-credit course are expected to spend a minimum of 4,500 minutes of out-of-class time specifically working on course-related activities (i.e., reading assigned pieces, completing homework, preparing for exams and other assessments, reviewing class notes, etc.) and fulfilling any other class activities or duties as required. Make-up Assignments or Assessments/Late Assignments or Assessments No assignments, projects, or assessments (i.e., midterm or final) may be taken late or turned in late except as indicated elsewhere in the syllabus for approved reasons (i.e., illness, university-approved absences, religious accommodations, extreme emergencies, etc.). Assessments in this course (midterm and final) are open during a sufficient window of time in which to begin the assessment. These windows are provided, at a minimum, during the scheduled course time. If a student misses the open window for taking an assessment, he or she will receive a grade of 0 on that particular assessment unless he or she has an approved reason (i.e., illness, university-approved absence, religious accommodation, extreme emergency, etc.). A student may not take an exam late without a university-approved reason and commensurate documentation. Incomplete Grade Policy Statement A student who is passing a course, but has not completed all work due to exceptional circumstances, may, with consent of the instructor, temporarily receive a grade of incomplete (I). The assignment of the I grade is at the discretion of the instructor, but is allowed only if the student is passing the course. The specific time required to make up an incomplete grade is at the discretion of the instructor. However, the College of Business policy on the resolution of incomplete grades requires that all work required to satisfy an incomplete (I) grade must be completed within a period of time not exceeding one calendar year from the assignment of the incomplete grade. After one calendar year, the incomplete grade automatically becomes a failing (F) grade. Grade Appeal/Academic Grievance Process A student may request a review of the final course grade when s/he believes that one of the following conditions apply: There was a computational or recording error in the grading. Non-academic criteria were applied in the grading process. There was a gross violation of the instructors own grading system. Withdrawals Any student who decides to drop is responsible for completing the proper process required to withdraw from the course. Attendance Policy Attendance is not mandatory except for the off-site private club event. The professor believes that students are adult learners and it is up to the student himself or herself if he or she wishes to attend on a regular basis and fully participate in the learning process. Remember, however, that regular attendance, in addition to active class involvement, often positively correlate with better academic performance. Attendance can also be construed as any distance learning or online activities scheduled for the course. Email Account Requirements students sometimes have problems if they have their emails forwarded to their personal account on another Internet Service Provider (ISP). As a student in this course, you are required to utilize your email address for all electronic mail correspondence. All electronic mail correspondence from the professor will be sent to the email address you have on file. Please make sure this address is functioning and able to accept incoming emails. The professor prefers communication via email. Students are required to check their email address a minimum of 3 times per week for the entire length of the semester in order to stay on top of their assigned readings, assignments, and exam information. Lock Down Browser/eTesting Statement This course does not employ the Lock Down Browser feature during online assessments. Electronic Devices Statement In order to enhance the learning environment, students are requested to use computers or related devices only for taking notes during class. Formal Business/Interviewing attire is required at this event. During this event, students will experience a private clubs outstanding level of service firsthand, will interact with department managers and executives, will sample food & beverage, and will be given face-to-face interviews with the human resources professionals from all clubs participating in this course (Addison Reserve, Admirals Cove, Boca West, Mizner Country Club, Polo Club, St. Andrews Country Club, and Woodfield). The site visit/interviewing event is worth 10% of the final grade (see Course Evaluation Method above). In order to earn the full percentage for this event, the student must arrive on time, attend the entire event, and interview with human resources.
